“The GentleMax emits a beam of light energy which is absorbed by the blood vessels, melanin, and hair follicle pigmentation. When the light reaches the hair follicle, it is converted into heat, destroying the follicle’s ability to regrow hair. The laser’s wavelengths can be adjusted to only affect the hair follicle, leaving surrounding tissues intact and skin soft to the touch.

Hair follicles go through active and dormant stages. During the treatment, the entire skin surface will be covered, but only active hair follicles will be impacted. For lighter skin types the most effective wavelength is the 755 nm Alexandrite wavelength and for darker skin, the most effective wavelength is the 1064 nm or Nd:YAG laser.

The treatment causes only minimal discomfort. Patients often say it feels similar to the snap of a rubber band. Slight redness or localized swelling can occasionally occur, but this usually subsides within the first 24 hours after treatment.

The side effects are uncommon and when they do occur they are temporary, they may include: redness, swelling, itching, mild to moderate burns or blisters, bruising, and hypopigmentation (loss of pigmentation), or hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin). We tell our patients the best way to maximize their results is to avoid sun exposure for the four weeks before treatment and four weeks following treatment. Also, clients who are pregnant should know that hormonal changes can affect the results of laser treatments.
